A day after Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha on 9th January , 2019 passed the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Fourth Amendment) Bill 2019 to introduce a 10% reservation for economically weaker sections among general category for jobs and educational institutions. The bill was supported by 165 members while seven members voted against it. The bill had the support of 323 lawmakers in the lower house. The quota is over and above 50 percent mandated for the SCs, STs and the OBCs. The major castes to benefit from the proposed law are Brahmins, Rajputs (Thakurs), Jats, Marathas, Bhumihars, several trading castes, Kapus and Kammas among other upper castes. The Bill amends Article 15 of the Constitution, by adding a clause which allows states to make "special provision for the advancement of any economically weaker sections of citizens".

Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), NASA’s latest planet-hunting probe, has discovered a new world outside our solar system, orbiting a dwarf star 53 light years away. This is the third new planet confirmed by TESS since its launch in April 2018. The planet has been named as HD 21749b. The planets orbits a bright, nearby dwarf star about 53 light years away, in the constellation Reticulum, and appears to have the longest orbital period of the three planets so far identified by TESS.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to transfer an interim dividend of up to Rs 30,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore ($4.32 billion-$5.8 billion) to the government by March. The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 recommended that the Assam government should help settle migrants especially in places which are not densely populated, thus, causing a lesser impact on the demographic changes and providing succour to the indigenous Assamese people. The Union Cabinet cleared the redrafted Citizenship Amendment Bill and it will be tabled in Parliament. Gruh Finance, the affordable housing finance arm of HDFC, will be merged with Bandhan Bank, the newest commercial bank. The move would help the Bandhan Bank to cut promoter stake from 82.3% to 61%. According to the deal, 568 equity shares of face value of Rs.10 each of Bandhan Bank is to be issued for every 1,000 equity shares of a face value of Rs.2 each of Gruh. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals. The swap ratio implies a 2.05% premium to the shareholders of Gruh. The combined entity is valued at Rs.84,000 crore.
